Goldstars will host Medeama in the Ghana premier league matchday 19 Today Sunday, 6 March 6, 2022 at Duns Park, Bibiani.
In a match that the Miners have to win to improve their chances for premier league survival.
Today’s premier league fixture goes beyond football for the Western North town as Ghana commemorate 65th anniversary of the country’s independence.
Why is it special for the people of Bibiani
Ghana’s Independence Day, 6th March every year has always being a normal holiday for every Ghanaian but the people of Western North, specifically, Bibiani goes beyond just a ‘mere normal holiday celebration.’
In contrast, 6th march is a big celebration day for the Chiefs and the people of Bibiani. Geographically, Bibiani, is an old mining town, in the Bibiani -Anhwiaso -Berkwai District in the Western North Region of Ghana.
Bibiani, is the district capital and is located 88 km from Kumasi in the Ashanti Region and 356 km from the western regional capital, Takoradi.
According to the history of the area, the declaration of Ghana’s Independence on the 6th of March 1957 gave their forefathers total freedom from the ‘all-white employers’ in charge of the then Bibiani’s first Gold mining company.
The ‘white employers’ occupied well-equipped bungalows and structures while the lucky indigenes were living in single rooms and under very harsh conditions which were out of bounds for the indigenes of the town.
Fast forward, Ghana was finally declared free from colonization. It is recalled that it was this day that the indigenes of Bibiani took over what belonged to them. The bungalows and club houses and other white dominated areas as a real show of ownership.
Why Goldstars must not taste defeat today
A defeat for Goldstars will affect the ‘fun’ aspect of the 6 march celebration.
On a sporting grounds, the Miners chances of survival would also be hugely affected.
Goldstars Sporting Club is the only Western North club in the Ghana’s top flight league, the Ghana premier league. The Miners are one point from the relegation zone as they hosts the Tarkwa based club this afternoon.
A defeat for the Bibiani based club would be too costly as they play Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko away in their next league match at the Baba Yara sports stadium-that will be a potential 6-points loss if the worse scenario happens.
With that said, the supporters will be there in their numbers today. They will urge their team on to victory with the stadium expected to be filled before kick-off.
Medeama on the other hand are 6th on the league log-A victory for the Mauve and Yellow’s will put them into top four positions.
Players to watch
Prince Opoku Agyemang will be playing against his former club after switching camp to Goldstars in the second transfer window.
Agyemang registered his first goal for the ‘Gye Nyame’ lads when they played as guest to Ashantigold in matchday 17 of the Ghana premier league.
Vincent Atinga at the heart of Medeama’s defence would have to be at his best to stop his former playing mate from causing any havoc. Vincent scored the only goal in a controversial 1-0 victory for Medeama over in-form Bechem United.
Form
Goldstars have played 8 matches at home. With the only defeat coming from Hearts and Kotoko. (P8 W6 D0 L2).
